Speak good English movement script
Romeo and Juliet
Narrator: One day, Romeo and Juliet were in the park chatting.
Juliet: Honey? Do you love me?
Romeo: Ya la! I really love you la! (Pronounces “really” like “rarely”)
Juliet: What? You RARELY love me? You do not even sound sincere! Do you have another girlfriend? What is her name?
Romeo: No la!
Juliet: What? Her name is Nora?
Romeo: What lah? Cannot tahan you sia! Always like that one!
Juliet: So now you are blaming it all on me?
Romeo: Where got? You don’t anyhow say hor!
(Passerby walks along.)
Passerby: What happened?
Juliet: He cheated on me!
Passerby: Oh my! (Turns to Romeo) How can you do that to her?
Romeo: I never hor! Don’t any how at-cuse me leh!!!
Passerby: I do not understand what you are talking about. (Turns to Juliet) Does he always speak in this manner?
Juliet: Yes, he does.
Romeo: Oi! Shut up lah! Not your daiji right? (Shouting at passerby)
Juliet: Romeo! I give up! Let’s break up! I had never understood you since young. No wonder you are jobless! Nobody understands you!
(Juliet starts walking away but Romeo grabs her)
Romeo: Please!!! Don’t leave me leh! I will lonely much de…
Juliet: So do you want me to break up with you?
Romeo: No la! I love you!!!
Juliet: How dare you mention that Nora again!!!
(Juliet slaps Romeo in slow motion then starts walking away.)
(Romeo grabs her.)
Passerby: You womanizer! You don’t deserve such a nice girl!
(Passerby slaps him but Romeo still reaches out for Juliet. Juliet slaps him but Romeo still reaches out for Juliet. Passerby slaps him but Romeo still reaches out for Juliet. Juliet slaps him but Romeo still reaches out for Juliet. Passerby pulls Juliet away and starts comforting her, who is crying.) (All slaps to be acted in slow motion to create effect.)
Romeo: Why is life like that sia?? Why ar? Why!
(Narrator comes out while Passerby comforts the crying Juliet , Romeo starts to beat his chest.)
Narrator: As you can see, speaking in broken English and singlish makes you sound less sincere. People might also not understand you what you are saying and less chances to find a job. Sometimes, people might even misunderstand you, which lead to more complications.
(Passerby stops comforting, Juliet stops crying, Romeo stops hitting his chest and all move to the center of the stage. Group leader shouts 1, 2 and 3 and we all bow.)
